Duke-Leiden Institute in Global and Transnational LawDetails

The Duke-Leiden Institute in Global and Transnational Law is a one-month residential programme providing a strong foundation for those interested in international and comparative law as well as for those planning to study law in the United States. Courses are taught by lecturers from both Duke Law School and Leiden Law School. The courses offered during the Duke-Leiden Institute 2020 are the following:

International Arbitration Training Course Details

Leiden University

The International Arbitration Training Course focuses on the theory and practice of international arbitration as a distinct field of the law and field of legal practice. It covers international commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration and inter-state arbitration. Besides a general course on the principles and practice of international arbitration, the programme offers several thematic courses on certain aspects of international arbitration, such as recognition and enforcement of arbitral awards and institutional arbitration, as well as area-specific courses. 

The course is offered by Leiden Law School in cooperation with the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

The course is targeted towards practitioners who seek to enlarge their vision or discover a new field of practice, and scholars seeking to gain expertise in the application of concepts and norms within the field of international arbitration. Advanced law students, researchers and professionals with a demonstrated interest in the topic are invited to apply.

International Criminal Law Summer School: From Theory to PracticeDetails

Leiden University

Students will be immersed in the field through lectures and exercises dealing with all aspects of International Criminal Law, from substantive crimes (genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and aggression) to complementarity, modes of liability, the rights of the accused and the role of victims. Throughout the two weeks, the participants will explore the City of Peace and Justice and will visit a number of international institutions, such as the International Criminal Court. The programme for the 2019 edition will be made public soon. ​

This summer school is aimed at law students (who have completed at least one year of their degree), young graduates and professionals with a background in law.

International Humanitarian Law in Theory and PracticeDetails

Leiden University

The International Humanitarian Law in Theory and Practice Summer School gives a broad overview of the laws of armed conflict, and offers a range of opportunities to test the acquisition of knowledge through interactive exercises, including an exciting paintball simulation game. The course covers, amongst others, the classification of conflicts, protection of the civilian population, combatants and prisoners of war, the rules governing the conduct of hostilities, and the law of non-international armed conflict.

The course offers a unique opportunity to learn from well-known and influential academics and leading practitioners from Leiden University, The Netherlands Defence Academy, The University of Amsterdam, the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Netherlands Red Cross.
