Big Data for Peace and Justice Summer School 2017Details

Leiden University

The Centre for Innovation has invited innovators who create digital solutions promoting the development of peace and justice to talk about their work and visions.

Professionals in the international peace and justice sector can turn toward 21st century technological advances to further their visions and commitments. By harnessing the data revolution and its immense potential for good we can for example use of the data from mobile phones, social media and other sources to better understand humanitarian crises and to monitor justice and safety worldwide. However, while maximising benefits, it is equally important to minimise associated risks. Questions such as ‘how do we secure all this data?’ and, ‘how do we protect the privacy of vulnerable populations?’ have to be posed and collectively solved.

The two-week summer course consists of a general module and an elective module of your choice. The four week summer course combines the two-courses and consists of two general modules and two elective modules. Each elective includes at least three organisational visits. Our academic staff is responsible for the content of the program and where we have partners in the field we co create with them. So you will meet not only our professors but also people from professionals from our Government and businesses in the region. An overview of electives modules you will find on the website www.thehaguesummerschool.com.

Theme

Each year, we focus on an umbrella theme that looks towards solving a ‘Wicked Problem.’ Students work on projects around a selected theme in both our general modules as well as the elective modules. This year, the umbrella theme is ‘sustainable cities’. With the changing demographics worldwide and growing of cities, we see a global rise in the importance of managing the effects this will have on social sustainability of cities.
